CHAPTER 15

Vivian awoke with a sense of disorientation, her eyes fluttering open to the dim light filtering through the curtains. The room around her was not her own and that quickly hit her hard. The weight of her recent decisions pressed upon her as she lay in the unfamiliar bed, the events of the past days playing in her mind like a vivid dream. She had gone from the comforts of her family home to a world entirely different, and the transition was not without its challenges. Despite her resolve and the bravery she had shown in agreeing to this hasty marriage, she could not help but feel a sense of vulnerability. The room held whispers of a life she was yet to fully understand, and as she rose from the bed, she knew that her journey in to this new chapter of her life had only just begun.

Her thoughts were interrupted as Sarah, her long time companion and maid, entered the room. Sarah’s face held a mixture of empathy and resolve as she approached.

“Good morning, milady,” Sarah said softly, her voice carrying the weight of understanding. If anyone knew how hard this was for Vivian, it was Sarah.

Vivian gave a faint smile, seeking solace. “Good morning, Sarah.”

The maid’s eyes brimmed with concern as she assessed Vivian’s state. “I know this is all overwhelming, milady. But you are strong. You can do this.”

Vivian nodded, her gaze shifting from the ornate canopy of her bed to Sarah’s kind face. “I appreciate your support, Sarah.”

Sarah moved closer and gently brushed a loose strand of hair from Vivian’s forehead. “We shall face this together, just as we have faced everything else. Now, let us prepare you for the day ahead.”

With Sarah’s gentle assistance, she began the process of getting dressed, her hands trembling slightly as she fastened the buttons of her gown. The sensation of the soft fabric against her skin provided a small measure of comfort.

A feeling of relief washed over her as she realized that the throbbing headache that had plagued her the previous day had faded in to a dull ache. It was a small mercy, considering the whirlwind of emotions and events that had transpired since her chance encounter with Lord Oliver Northington. The headache was a reminder of what had brought her here, but Vivian did not want to continue living in that moment. She did not want to remain in the past. She had to adjust to the future and her new life now.

Vivian gazed down at her outfit. Her fingers traced the delicate embroidery that adorned the high waisted gown, its bodice and puffed sleeves were terribly fashionable. The fabric, a soft shade of powder blue, was embellished with intricate floral patterns in shades of ivory and silver, reminiscent of the blooming gardens of her family’s estate.

The gown was accompanied by a silk sash that cinched at her waist, adding a touch of elegance to the ensemble. A fine lace fichu, chosen to be both modest and fashionable, cascaded gracefully down her shoulders, framing her décolletage.
